This exhibition celebrates the return to Te Aitanga a Hauiti of the Pou o Hinematioro. The pou left Ūawa in 1769 on board the Endeavour, and after many years in private collections, became part of the Ethnological Collection of the University of Tübingen.

The pou was exhibited in 1977, but it was not until 1996 that the curator Volker Harms was able to identify it. Now fully aware of the pou’s importance, he set about making its whereabouts known.

In 2008 a Toi Hauiti delegation made contact with Harms, and travelled to Tübingen to reunite with their ancestor. This was the beginning of an extensive relationship building exercise, enabling connections, networks, influences and strong bonds. Te Aitanga a Hauiti travelled to Europe again in 2009 and 2011, and in 2019 Hinematioro was welcomed back to Ūawa, after which she was displayed in the Tairāwhit Museum as part of the Tū te Whaihanga exhibition, along with other taonga which had left on board the Endeavour in 1769. At the end of the exhibition, Hinematioro returned to Germany, but the connection between Hauiti and Tübingen was maintained. This culminated in a jointly curated exhibition, Te Pou o Hinematioro (2025-26), at Hohentübingen Castle. Kaitiakitanga of the pou was formally handed over on 29 March 2026, and Hinematioro returned home, this time for good.
