He has been involved in the arts sector for over 15 years as a curator, educator, writer, selector and instigator. The 80s Show, with paintings from the Fletcher Trust Collection, has been curated by Tauranga Art Gallery to give those born after 1990 an opportunity to contextualise the period, while reacquainting earlier generations with a time that has become synonymous with pop culture classics and tumultuous events.
Curator Karl Chitham explains that the art world experienced a peak in that time not seen in the decades before. The exhibition features paintings by significant New Zealand artists such as Philip Clairmont, Julian Dashper, Dick Frizzell, Max Gimblett, Jeffrey Harris, and Gordon Walters.
“The centrepiece is a selection of artworks that chart some of the high points in our cultural history, contrasted against a backdrop of highly charged social and political events,” Karl explains.
The 80s Show has been developed and toured by Tauranga Art Gallery Toi Tauranga. This exhibition has been generously supported by Craigs Investment Partners. Special thanks to the Fletcher Trust Collection.
